The proposed data center near Uhl Road may ultimately prove beneficial for Glenn Heights. It may generate tax revenue, attract investment, and contribute to future economic growth.
However, residents should not be expected to accept those claims without supporting information.
The project received City Council approval in October 2024, yet many residents are only now learning details about the development and asking questions about its long-term impact on the community. Those questions are reasonable, and they deserve clear answers supported by facts, studies, and data.
Residents have asked about projected water usage, wastewater demand, utility capacity, infrastructure impacts, permanent job creation, and the long-term fiscal benefits promised by the project. After reviewing the publicly available agenda packet, Glenn Heights Future located information regarding zoning, development standards, incentives, road improvements, park funding, and trail construction. We were unable to locate clear answers to several of the questions residents continue to raise.
Some may argue that water consumption will be minimal or that water can be reused within the facility. If that is true, residents should have the opportunity to review the studies, projections, engineering reports, and assumptions supporting those conclusions. Reassurance is not a substitute for documentation. Confidence is not a substitute for data.
The same standard should apply to every aspect of the project. If utility studies were completed, residents should be able to review them. If environmental analyses were performed, residents should be able to see them. If projections exist regarding jobs, tax revenue, infrastructure demands, or future city costs, those projections should be made available for public review.
Questions are not opposition. Transparency is not obstruction. Residents who ask for information are participating in the process exactly as they should.
The June 30 town hall presents an opportunity to move beyond talking points and provide the community with substantive answers. Whether a resident supports the project, opposes it, or remains undecided, everyone benefits when decisions are supported by facts rather than assumptions.
Good projects can withstand scrutiny. Good decisions can survive questions. The residents of Glenn Heights deserve both.
